Just a month after banning 59 apps of
Chinese origin, the Indian Government has decided to impose a ban on
250 Chinese origin apps. Earlier, TikTok, which was a short video
streaming or a micro-video app has already been removed from the Google
Play Store after an interim order passed by the Madras High Court.
Apart from TikTok and UC Browser mostly used for surfing the internet, a
dozen more Chinese apps are banned or blocked on the Google Play Store
as these apps are posing danger to the integrity of the country.
The list is huge where it is finalized to
examine the Chinese apps for any violation of national security and
can be banned immediately in India if found to be violating the rules.
With a fresh list, the total number of apps to be banned in India could
be around 275 as per the critics. As per the latest report, the new
list of banned apps may consist of 275 Chinese apps including PUBG.
PUBG is a Chinese app backed by Tencent, and Zili which is another
Chinese app included in the list is backed by Xiaomi and AliExpress.
AliExpress is an online shopping portal owned by the Alibaba Group of
companies.
The motive of the government of India
behind banning all those apps is to counter China’s cyberattack plot, and
the cybersecurity department has already started removing applications
that let Beijing control and mine confidential information. Moreover, in
order to acknowledge the sovereignty over our sensitive data. Apart
from PUBG, there are different other non-popular apps made by
Xiaomi like Capcut, FaceU, LBE Tech, Meitu, Perfect Corp, Sina Corp,
Netease games, Helinski-based Supercell, and YooZoo Global.
What the Government says –
As per government sources, it was known
that the government has designed a process for such bans and the ministry
concerning cybersecurity has been asked to frame in law for the constant
examination of the Chinese origin apps that are used in India.
Moreover, there are a set of different rules which defines that the
banning procedures may take time but is done the correct manner to move
ahead with the decision in the long run.
Further, it was known that the government
will follow certain rules in terms of banning apps in the country.
According to the ministry of electronics and information technology,
there is already an ongoing process and a committee in place to look
after the processing of the ban orders, and the orders may be used if there
is any violation discovered regarding the apps. However, about a month ago when India
banned a total of 59 Chinese origin apps there were different
speculations about PUBG that it may be banned in the coming months. Unfortunately,
a lot of PUBG users of India will suffer the effect of the ban as the
game had the largest user base in the country with around 175 million
downloads. As per the market statistics, it is found that the Chinese
Internet companies used to serve around 300 million users in India
with nearly two-thirds of the apps already downloaded by the smartphone
users of the country.
For PUBG, India had the largest user base
but its future is stark as of now due to the ban of the app in the
country. The app was so popular among the younger generation that it had a
stake of 24% of the total downloads.
